New Star Kebab Review ~ Turkish - Auburn Road, Aurburn

Two kebabs and a pint of your finest yoghurt please.

Like a pair of excited kids off to the Easter Show we drive to Auburn for some serious street food. Auburn is great for a food safari with a bunch of hole in the wall eateries, Turkish, Chinese and more. Even on a lazy autumn Sunday afternoon Auburn has a buzz about it: there are folks from all over the world, it's lively, fun and street foodie heaven.

We have no particular restaurant in mind. I just let Miss Chicken wander round and sniff, she has an amazing talent for finding good food. We walk up and down the strip, there's a few places that look great. New Star Kebab seems to be drawing the biggest crowd so we give it a shot. The staff seemed particularly confident and proud of their food, we instantly get the impression that this place has a legion of dedicated fans.

I ask to try the yoghurt drink and get a very generous pint of it. It is surprisingly refreshing, not thick and gluggy like a lassi, and it is either non-sweetened or semi-sweetened with a slightly sour taste. It's my new favourite drink.

It's the adana kebabs I have come for: fresh, marinated, meat skewered and cooked over hot coals. They have a dedicated adana cook, he knows what he is doing.

We lash out on an adana plate with an extra kebab, more food that we can eat for $15.

We have a rule never to rearrange the food for photos but for this we just have to move the bread to see all the glorious innards. The best part is the piece of bread under the kebabs that has soaked up all the juices.

Miss Chicken chooses the Iskender kebab, we were over the moon about this dish. It is kebab meat sliced and cooked on a hot plate until a little crispy, served on top of bread with a fresh-tasting tomato sauce and yoghurt. $11 and big enough for two. Miss Chicken described her post-meal elevated mood as a 'protein high'.

We are absolutely stuffed so we get a doggy bag and also this spicy minced meat roll to go.

I think it was called a Lahmacun. It was delicious and only $4.

We pickup up some Lebanese sweeties then head for home to eat the leftovers. We were dying to take photos of the old Chinese aunties selling fresh herbs on the footpath but they weren't keen models, in hindsight a small donation probably would have fixed it. Doh!

New Star Kebabs is at 15 Auburn Road, Aurburn.

  3. I used to come here back in 2001, glad to see its still doing well! I totally adored their lamb kebab on a plate. I hope they still have the themed table down the back! So comfy! But really, their lamb is super.. I think its time for another visit!

  4. I love this place so much, very friendly people and good service. If you are looking for a mouth watering feast I would defintely recommend New Star, this is one of my favourite place to go when I think about food. It is not big though, but still good. It's my fifth consecutive year that I am still and would love to go again in the future always.

Thanks for your comment joy - please keep your musings happy - if you want to complain about a restaurant please do it on a restaurant review site (or your own blog) - we're all about celebrating cultural diversity and the great nom noms that come along with it. Think Maeve O'Meara, not Masterchef :-)
Our ethics: We pay for all our own meals and travel (although sometimes our Mum shouts us).
